Billingham March into next round
With the weather settling down prior to kick off, Billingham welcomed Consett to Greenwood Road for the first round of the Cup.
Consett started the game in a positive mood from the catch showing intent on taking the game to Billingham, only for a strong tackle by Joe Syson followed by a quick turnover and passing releasing Charlie to break wide and open the scoring, setting the tone for the rest of the first half.
Further tries followed with the try of the half coming from Joe Syson with a dummy pass throwing the Consett defence and running through the gap to complete the try.
Tries continued through Freddie Gardner x2, Eben Robinson, Charlie Evans to take a 6-0 lead by halftime.
The 2nd half started in a much different way with Billingham losing concentration with poor handling and passing, allowing Consett to grow in confidence and taking the game to Billingham. Although mistakes were made the defensive line stayed strong holding off Consett’s constant attacks, one over exuberant tackle saw a
Billingham player on the sidelines for a few minutes. However, instead of dwelling on the referees decision, Billingham turned defence into attack with some well worked passing releasing Joe Syson to score the final try of the game at 7-0.
Special mention should go to the Consett side with their ‘never say die’ attitude, and a thank you to the referee for controlling a physical game at short notice. MOTM awards went to Forwards Harry Davison(Coaches choice) and Riley Ward (Referee choice).
