Billingham were to hot to handle on a day more suited to BBQ than Rugby Union

ACKLAM TALBOTS V 3TM

Once again after a cry off from Whitby 3TM picked up a fixture against the team currently second in the league above them. No problem they have already beaten the team currently top but with cry offs from key players like Scotty Thompson, injuries to playmaker Dunning, enforcer Kelsey etc. and others going shopping (Watson) it looked to be a difficult task on a really hot day. Players were called up to the seconds so once again it was a mammoth task to get a team together but it was decided as Donaldson was moved to outside half to go for a more reliable scrum half in Adnett as last weeks substitute nine had not made 3TM grade. Robbie Garth etc. slotted in at full back as Elgie moved into the centre. The other (larger) Kelsey teamed up with McGravey in a very effective partnership and Surtees (the other one) playing in the same style as his brother but from hooker this week. With a quarter of the game gone Adnett at nine took the ball into contact like a sixteen stone back row (something about some scrum half players must have been watching Woody) Donaldson was on hand to set away on a weaving run to pop to Sixsmith on route one. The ball whizzed out to Naz who despite his new bulky frame showed a clean pair of heels to loop around the defence to open 3TM account. Hall was drafted in to number eight and did what all of our number eights do in 3TM All black hand offs were the tactic used by Phil. Talbots struck back with a difficult penalty but on the half hour Simpson who defends like a demon actually got the ball. Not being used to this rare occurrence he decided to run into the opposition half. Donaldson took the pass out of the tackle and finished in style. A bit of indiscipline gave Acklam another three points from the boot right on half time.

Young lad Young (?) came on for the experienced Morgan who once again had dominated the lineout and provided the donkey work in the powerhouse with Gray making a welcome return after getting permission from his Lady. With three quarters of the game gone Coggy Canham broke through to score. 3TM pressed hard into their twenty two (old term) so it was decided to bring on short yardage expert Mr Whiteline Sudron for Massey who had hammered the opposition attack from the back row with Surtees playing his normal hard hitting game. Simpson made way for the evergreen Morrison on seventy minutes he set off on a trademark run straight at the opposition to be stopped just short. The maul formed and who should turn up at the back but Mr Anniversary Whiteline Sudron to follow the pack over the line to score. The final try of the game came as Billingham pressed hard and the home defence panicked throwing a loose ball. Elgie reacted like lightning to pounce on the wobbling ball to sprint over and score Phil Hall stroked the conversion over with ease to close out the game.
Reporters comment:-
Another great win against a second team and the guys who stepped up or played out of position showing the true spirit of the Billingham Rugby Union Football Club.
