Games just dont come better than this....
''Best game of rugby i've seen'' one supporter shared on social media
It truly was a thriller, a game of end to end rugby.... Billingham have always promised fast flowing rugby however no-one expected could have expected this level of excitement.
The weather Gods were out in force allowing for the ball to be thrown about.
It was already mentioned in the pre match preview that Blackburn were a side to be wary of... Their sheer size fills most sides with fear. The difference from 2 seasons ago is that this Blackburn side can also play ball!
After just 4 minutes Blackburn were on the scoreboard and it was quickly converted. Blackburn had travelled to Billingham to upset the applecart.
It took until 10 minutes in that Billingham got a foot hold in the game and impressive second row Mike Walton scored under the posts. Jobe Roxby converted.
It wasnt long before Billingham were on the back foot. James Boyd-Bell making his first competitive start saw yellow for repeated team infringements. Blackburn quickly capitalised scoring 3 consecutive tries without response. The crowd could sense an upset coming given the circumstances. With injuries to Ben Walton and Dan Burns saw the return of Dom McAlorum in his first competitive first XV game in nearly 2 seasons following injury and Peter Youll who had to slot in at the unfamiliar number 6 position.
On 37 minutes something clicked. Billingham had most of the possession. They started winning collisions, gaining yards which allowed Alfie Lawson to crossover the whitewash for the first of his double.
Upon the receipt of the kick off Billingham headed back up field and this time it was Anth Jackson who has been in impressive form to cross the line. Jobe kicked the extras.
The ref blew his whistle... time for the crowd to catch their breath. 19-26 down with a big 40 minutes ahead!!
Much like the week before it was Billingham who scored first when scrum half Conner Foley found a gap at the edge of a ruck to snipe over. 24-26... Billingham were back in it!!
However Blackburn werent here to allow Billingham to run away with it. Power, guile and finesse saw then cross the line taking stretching the lead to 24-31. The excitement was building. Both teams were now allowing the ball to be thrown around in a Barbarian style game.
The game continued to be open which played into the hands of Billingham which saw Billingham score 2 quick fire scores through Alfie Lawson and Luke Wilson which finally saw Billingham take a 36-31 lead with 11 minutes on the clock.
Blackburns points machine Paddy Gaffey found himself on the score sheet converting his own score which saw Blackburn regain the lead 36-38. Only 3 minutes left on the clock....
Blackburn bombarded the Billingham. A fine defensive display allowed Billingham to hold out despite the pressure.
Time was running out... could they do the impossible? YES THEY COULD.
Anth Jackson the hero scoring in the 78th minute....43-38.
Billingham have done it. As the referee blew for full time both teams dropped to their knees in exhaustion. The crowd cheered and clapped for both teams. It was a game to be enjoyed by the supporter. It was a great advert for grass roots rugby.
Head coach Pete Evans added ' Just one of those games where you have dig in and find a way. Pretty tragic first 20 minutes but rugby is all about momentum and we fought our way back before half time. The heart the lads showed is something to be respected. Injuries and decisions didn’t help and we can’t afford to give teams so many unanswered points but as shown time and time again, this senior group of players refuse to be beaten.'
Next up is Lymm away....
