Billed as the game of the day, Billingham travelled the short distance to face Otley. 1st vs 2nd, David vs Goliath.
Unlike the biblical tale it was Goliath won this battle.... however not with out David putting up a fight.
Otley are top of the table and not lost a game all season... and this game showcased the reason why. Otley were clinical. Their forwards were big and dominant around the park. The backs were clever in their play, defensively sound and kicked to the corners effectively which kept Billingham at bay.
Billingham started strongly winning a turnover and a subsequent penalty. Peter Evans kicked to the corner. Big carries by Clark and Burns say Billingham take the ball up to the 5 metre line. A quick fire pass from Foley saw Peter score the opening points of the game with a cleverly taken drop goal.
From the kick off, Otley upped the anti. They were starting to win the favour of the referees decisions. Infringements, missed tackles saw Otley take the lead through clever interlink play.
Further scores by Otley following a yellow for Clark saw them take a 21-3 into half time.
Billingham came out ready to place, Ryan Kirkbride was busting holes, Joe Evans came on after 2 years out with a knee and change the game dynamic. Billingham were playing ball. The more they threw the ball about it did leave them exposed at times with Otley capitalising twice with no reply.
With time going by Billingham looked to get on the scoreboard. Again Kirkbride made yards through the middle. Mike Walton was finding gaps on the outside but it was the crucial last play that stopped Billingham, a turnover, a knock on...it seemed like it wasnt going to be the case that Billingham were going to cross the line.
However on the 76th minute, Otley played out from the back, a Ben Walton tackle saw Conner Foley rip possession and the ball found its way into the hands of Martin Hopley who scampered 30 metres into the corner. 33-8. Finally we could show a wry smile!
A day to forget as far as the result.
One thing we are proud of is the support. Billingham outnumbered Otley 2 to 1 and were in full voice throughout. Thank you so much. Although the result wasnt able to be sought it gave the boys reassurance.
We go again next week when we face another tough game against Preston Grasshopper.
Its also Ex PLayers Day... going to be a busy one. Get your tickets early... £7 from behind the bar. Match entry and food on the evening!
We go again
