We Caught Up With Joe Spoors Following His Return From A Long Layoff

Mike Brown10 May - 14:44

Excited to see Joe back!

What was the biggest challenge for you that you faced this year?

The biggest challenge was definitely recovering from injury. Being sidelined since March 2024 and going through the ups and downs of rehab was tough both physically and mentally. It was frustrating not being able to contribute on the pitch, but staying focused on the long-term goal kept me going.

How did your role evolve throughout the season, on or off the pitch?

While I wasn’t able to play for most of the season, I tried to stay involved where I could, supporting the lads from the sidelines and staying connected with the team. Toward the end of the season, I was grateful to get back into it with 3 games for the 2s, which helped me rebuild confidence and find some rhythm again, ready for next season.

What lessons are you taking into the off-season?

Patience and consistency. Recovery taught me that progress isn’t always quick or linear, but turning up each day and doing the small things right makes a difference over time.

Was there a specific moment that tested your mental toughness?

Yes, probably around the midpoint of recovery, when progress felt slow and I wasn’t sure how long it would be until I was match-fit again. It took a lot of mental effort to stay disciplined and trust the process, even when I couldn't see big improvements week to week.

How has your approach to training or recovery changed this year?

I’ve become much more structured and intentional. This has helped me with my prep for next year, and I’ve already lost over a stone with more to go before the season starts in September.

Who or what inspired you most during the season?

The boys who kept pushing week in, week out, especially in tough games. Seeing the commitment from everyone around the club, even when I couldn’t be on the pitch myself, kept me motivated to get back.

What area of your game are you most focused on improving before next season?

General fitness. Now that I’m recovered, I want to be quicker, more explosive, and sharper around the park. The games I played for the 2s showed me i still have the ability, so bow i just have to put myself in the best position to show that, and I’m putting in the work now to come back stronger for next season.
