In a week where I have had trouble tracking my tariffs it’s a bumper bundle of rugby action at Greenwood road, the first 15 looking for points in the relegation battle plus the Loins and 3rd team in cup final action. It’s been bubbling all week with arrangements, which Blaydon team will turn up, dress code for sponsors bar entry and who gets priority strapping with Scott pre-game. Of course we know the scores now but no spoilers this early in the report, it’s a massive achievement across the club to continue to field a range of teams of each gender both seniors and juniors, but getting to any final is the cherry on a very large cake. As we near the end of the season the tours, club dinners, cup finals and final games keep rolling in which again indicate the strength of the club. So it’s the penultimate match report and the last home game to savor, 3 teams to keep an eye on and as someone has mentioned the joy of not having to read this for hours on a Monday morning to look forward to.
It’s been quite a week weather wise as summer has come early which made the gym session on Thursday challenging with Betty S making the first appearance of the year. Enhanced with tunes the usual suspects heavily breathed through the session then met up in the bar for a session of addition, subtraction and various combinations. For those of you feeling the pinch after the new tax year National insurance hike I can confirm that if you buy a round and use your BRUFC gold loyalty card you get enough credit for a chocky bar of your choice, Mathew “Martin Lewis” alert!! An undercover group of supporters went over to watch Leeds on Friday night, mainly to gather information on Harrogate (not really) but no points for Harrogate this weekend sharpens the focus for the Green and Whites to nab some points. I understand that a “few” are going over to Harrogate for the last game so make sure you have made travel arrangements ASAP, bus space is at a premium this is not a drill.
It’s a very warm day with a light breeze and most of my usual comrades are located in the sponsor’s bar. We are very lucky to have a range of great sponsors and Billingham windows have more than a few links to the club but have and continue to be a stalwart supporter. I wander down to the mount to watch the warm ups but its location, location, location this week to get the best of all three matches. A light breeze means that the camo jacket stays on as the spotters on the balcony phone to check if I am actually on the mount; hat is on to keep the sun of the bald patch rather than keep warm. It’s a very warm day for the big lads to be running around but everyone is up for it.
2 bells and the Lions are out ready, Green and whites on the side pitch playing away from the club house garage end towards the SBC depot. Blaydon kick off and Billingham knock on as the nerves haven’t quite settled. It’s a steady scrum but Blaydon are out of the blocks quick forcing Billingham to infringe and then a quick tap sees them on the board with an early converted try. It already looks a cracker with both teams looking to move the ball about as the main pitch warm up winds down. Its steady progress now up the pitch from the green and whites, a charge from Spoors but Blaydon collect a loose pass and exit, knocking on out far side. Billingham secure the ball from the scrum platform the air the ball to banish the doughnut to even the scores.
As the 3 team wander up to start warming up on the top pitch the teams are on to the AGP for the national 2 clash, Sheffield, black with amber trim safe towards the foot of the table and Billingham Green and white still very much in the relegation equation. Official compliment the skies with a light blue affair. It’s Sheffield to kick off towards the club house end and the now packed sponsors bar and balcony area, eyes down two games on. A long kick is collected, Tigers chase well and then restrict a clean break so it’s a kick pass or kick to touch to exit. Clean jumper for Tigers as they spread the ball wide and nudge through to chase, the ball rolls into touch. Its Dan Burns up at the line out as Billingham look to move out from deep, Tigers steal at the breakdown and switch the ball to the dugout side, its arm up from Mr Blue as Tigers look to develop the free ball with a nudge through but its back for the penalty. It’s a kick to touch to set up the line out, catch and drive is successfully stopped short but Tigers retain and have several goes at the line before they hit the whitewash, converted it’s the visitors who get the board moving 0 – 10. Early indications highlight a very physical encounter Billingham have to make an early switch and Tigers look to get in the breakdown quick so this will be a key area.
Luke Wilson pops the kick off into the air, Tigers collect and no messing exit up the line dugout side. It’s a one hander from Burns to collect the line out then Adam Brown with a charge round the corner, Billingham looking to get a little time with the ball and in Tigers territory. It’s back across the pitch as Tigers get in over the ball again, a slight hint of in from the side but the arm goes up. Tigers kick for touch and for the line out move the ball across and release the 7 into space, Jo Scarborough tackles as Tigers pop the ball down the line the Billingham cover collects but is bundled into touch. This sets up Tigers for a similar catch and drive but on the other side from the first try, they gather but there’s an obstruction signaled which allows Billingham to pop it up the touch line. Line outs are becoming quite a contest but Billingham retain this and move out, AJ in the line with a run but Tigers strip the ball. Its phases for Tigers as they duck and dive to get the gain and slowly progress, arm aloft for a high tackle. Tigers opt for the sticks and the points are taken as a water break and coaching tips is passed on, 0 – 10 with Tigers purring (sorry I had to use it).
Billingham kick off and it’s a box kick to exit which AJ charges down, unlucky bounce favors Tigers as Scabs tackles the collector into touch. Line out collected, its Ben Walton on the charge as the ball is moved across the pitch looking to stretch Tigers defence. Its back the other way as Burns pops up on the wing and Scabs looks for a break. Tigers cover across as Billingham look to the middle with a Luke Wilson half break with Louis Groak on the shoulder. Ball lost in view of the line and Tigers exit the ball via the boot. Line out is scrappy and Tigers halt Billingham midfield at the breakdown, Tom Campbell in the thick of it and needing a quick Scotty check. Scrums from my view point start even but Tigers develop as the game goes on, this one is steady and allows Billingham a platform it’s a nudge through for chasers but goes dead. It’s back for a Tigers scrum and after a few resets they get the nudge and break down the stand side, arm up and Tigers opt for the bottom corner again. Line out is not straight but presents Billingham with tricky scrum in a dangerous position, luckily Tigers go early and the penalty allows Billingham to exit. Despite a few glimpses of breaks Tigers contain well and force a kick over the top that goes straight out, from the line out clean and quick passing builds a bit of uncle mo as Tigers mix the attack going round the breakdown a couple of times then spreading the ball back across the pitch to go clear. Looks like Tigers are in but a Billingham player gets underneath but the roll must have allowed the ball to be grounded as Mr Blue sky is on the scene to indicate try. Unconverted it’s becoming a tricky encounter for the home side with a 0 – 15 score line.
Billingham kick off and Tigers 15 collects and looks to exit down the dugout side, Elliott Husband keeps the ball in and set off back, Billingham look through the middle as the gains slowly develop. Arm up to signal the penalty as Billingham keep playing and release AJ up the middle to give the home team a boost under the sticks, converted by Peter Evans it gets the doughnut off the board for the home team, 7 – 15.
It seems to have galvanised the Green and whites, from the kick off Burns collects and Nathan Myers gets a strong charge in. It’s switched to the stand side as Joe Ross puts in a trademark run (moves like the dance floor) to get into the Tigers half. Tigers are too eager at the breakdown and are pinged with the ball popped into the corner. Line out is dropped but then knocked on as the man in the middle gives scrum to Billingham, too early from Tigers arm up again. Tap and go from Billingham then high tackle, quick tap with Tigers nowhere near 10 but play on as the forwards go close a couple then Ben Walton is in space to score. Peter strokes the conversion over as the home team narrows the gap to go with in one, 14 -15.
Tigers kick off and bundle Burns into touch, Tigers collect the line out and stretch across the pitch then nudge through that rolls into touch but it’s a line out deep. Penalty at the line out allows Billingham to clear to touch, Jamie Lane tidies up the line out ball as Billingham look to strike last in the half, both teams get half chances but Elliot sends a nudge through that bobbles into touch and the half ends.
I would say refreshments but it’s a quick update on the Loins who are down but not out as all eyes swap to the 3rds on the top pitch who are about to kick off. It’s a massive crowd to watch the cup final against Washington in the sun, a great turn out from both clubs as ex-players, managers and family line the pitch with a carnival like feel in the air. I feel like I should be wearing a sombrero and sipping a tequila sunrise as I wander down the club house but the mount gives an excellent view point for both games and fills up quickly so I stay put. I will say that watching 3 games means that I missed action on all pitches rather than missing most action from one game on one pitch this week.
We flip back to the AGP as the second house starts, Billingham kicking towards the club house with Tigers sending a bobbler straight back. Billingham collect and to a switch middle of the park which Tiger counter well and get over the ball after a couple of breakdowns. It’s a belter of a kick up the field into the corner as Tigers look regain the mo early. Tigers collect and go close several times as Billingham defend the line as its side to side with men over until Tigers knock on. Its Billingham with the next clear chance as they move the ball and Joe Ross gets a glimpse of space, out the back pass to Groaky at pace but the ball is lost out wide as Tigers pump it back up the pitch. There a lot going on and penalties are racking up as Billingham gain more time in the Tigers half. It’s a further penalty that allows Billingham to pop it into the dugout side corner, line out collected there a couple of near drives then across for Groaky to bag the try in front of the club house. Peter adds to the tally as the home side goes in front for the first time during the match 21 -15.
Tigers kick off and rebound off a Billingham knee allows them to retrieve, it’s all Tigers again as they look to pressure the far side with multiple phases. Billingham look to have stolen the ball but not fairly so it’s a penalty for Tigers and they opt for the sticks to keep the game tight. 21 -18 and it’s a nail biter. In a lively encounter the 3rds are up on the top pitch and the Lions are losing as squad Blaydon look to add some silverware to their survival in the Northern division – region 1 North East.
Billingham kick off with Tigers back on the counter attack as they switch the ball and the pop it up the line, a lovely bounce into a Tiger bread basket at pace as Billingham cover, then strip the ball. Tigers look to regain but not legally, Billingham look to use the line out from the penalty as a platform but not straight. Tiger scrum is now on the up, no early push but they do force penalties for the remainder of the match. This one goes into the corner, Burns contests to steal but Tigers seal off the maul so another dangerous scrum to counter. Arm up again for advantage Tigers at the scrum and they keep that advantage as they turn the screw via the forwards, although the try comes when its moved along the line and a inside runner beats the cover, converted Tigers advantage at 21 -25.
Billingham kick off and Tigers collect sending a high kick up the pitch, collected after a juggle but then Billingham knock on. Scrum time as Billingham get a push on but its reset as Tigers then get the arm up advantage but look to use the free ball which fizzles out. Sticks for the tigers to move the score on again, accurate for 21 – 28.
Billingham kick off and contest well to regain the ball, Ewan Lydiatt pulls in three to tackle as the forwards allow quick ball it’s a high tackle midfield signaled by the club house disapproval. It’s into the corner, line collected as Billingham send the forwards in search of the try, big effort to keep the ball alive as Tigers look to hold it up, with the outside men primed it’s a cheeky snipe from Elliot Husband, converted to draw the score level 28 – 28.
I’m sure that a draw wasn’t discussed on Thursday but we continue as Burns collects and is bundled into touch. Tigers overthrow and Ewan at the tail tidies up and Peter belts the ball up field to exit. Tigers collect the line out and look to get the drive going, Billingham standoff then look to tackle but blocked, Billingham scrum and they get out quick moving the ball across the pitch its moved back up the middle, but its Tigers who get over the ball getting a kick to touch for a breather. Line out is scrappy but AJ collects the loose ball and its Billingham phases knocking on the door, the forwards go close a couple of times. The ball is moved to under the posts as Tigers look to intercept, it doesn’t go to hand or I expect he would have been away. It compound it he kicks the ball away and the yellow is shown. Billingham opt for the sticks as Peter takes as much time as he can then calmly pops it over, 31 -28.
Tigers kick off and look to retrieve it’s a knock on and scrum Billingham, Tigers pressure as Billingham look to retain until it’s time to pop it onto the now vacant side pitch. A quick update as Blaydon win the 2nd team cup, Billingham first 15 get a win and 4 try bonus point and now all eyes on the 3rds on the top pitch, who are ahead. It’s nip and tuck on the top pitch as Washington get a score in the corner unconverted its 26 -20 to the home side. We see a treble fly hack from Billingham which then goes over the dead ball line, several flowing moves and a Billingham runner at pace go into the corner plus Lewis Mallam with a sweet conversion from the side line to move the score to 33 -25 but still time to play. As Washington retained the ball and Billingham looked to contain, with controversy at the final whistle as Billingham looked to have knocked on (at least) to end the game. Cup glory for the 3rd team in front of a bumper crowd with Washington pushing to the final whistle, it was a great advert for the game and good to see supporters, players and officials from all clubs at the presentations and in the club house after the games.
What a day, really a season’s worth of rugby in one afternoon, good value and talking points galore. So we go down to the last game, who said it was a rollercoaster and there will be a lot of recovery from that tough encounter to see who the squad is. I may even turn up at this one just to make sure, hopefully I will see you there? #OSIOS
No time in this report for this is not a drill, remember to floss, big boy pants on, you know the drill, what did I have to put in the match report?, 3d mapping Spoors, don’t forget your drill, Come on Eileen has a lot to answer for, UTB (up the Burn’s), So if they get a point but they don’t then we can get one but may need two?, heave ho Wagga, by mutual agreement, drill, drill, drill, snake hips Ross and do the walk of life on repeat.
