Returning players, young guns and long retired comeback players prove to strong at Greenwood

Billingham 3TM v Guisborough

Cardiff took its toll on team availability and a prior commitment collecting wrestling medals meant 3TM had to draw on untapped resources. The visitors brought a well beefed up team to face 3TM with players called out of retirement, players out of position and a good smattering of young guns from the Colts. Facing a strong wind the “vets” of the team battled in an epic forward display. Then wham the ball spun through the backs with scrum half Bain zipping the ball out to the back line Dunning, Taylor, Foster and then Mallam who turned on the gas to sprint in from distance with ten minutes gone. Dunning converted off the post despite a swirling wind making kicking difficult. Three minutes later Foster broke through and set Mallam away for his second from distance, then after twenty two minutes a carbon copy score gave the Colt a brilliant hat trick. Low returning from an arm injury (Leaning on to many bars) was laser accurate with his throws and with Kelsey and Hall throwing up Brown and Churlish it was a dominant pack in the lineout and scrum. The visitors tried to rough it up with Hall being singled out for a couple of shots (Big mistake!) Surtees as usual all over the park with back row partner Rowlands knocking their attacks back in the open added to the score right on half time with a great blindside break
Half Time Billingham 3TM 26 v Guisborough 0
Brumpton who had put in some great defensive work made way for Elliot at full back as Guis pulled back with an unconverted try. Bates returned to Greenwood road and went to centre in a reshuffle as Dunning received a nasty cut to the ear (Off Kelsey) requiring hospital treatment. Morrison handed over the management duties to Woodhouse (Senior) and replaced Lowe in the front row, later moved to the back row then to his more accustomed wing position and McPhail replaced Surtees in the back row. McClean had to leave the park following some excellent work both in attack and defence with a shoulder injury to bring Brumpton back on Elliot was adjudged to lay over the ball and was carded reducing 3TM to fourteen players and scored two tries to come within two scores of Billingham. On twenty five minutes a tap penalty was quickly taken by Guz who did what Guz does all game and ran through the defence to score he had used his hand off (it was awesome) earlier in the game . On the half hour the Yorkshire men were awarded a penalty try for an infringement pulling back to within one score to level the scores. The lads dug deep and played out the last ten minutes to maintain their one hundred percent winning record against a very good visiting side. Another excellent display showing the true spirit of the club and the team.
