Bishop Auckland U16s v Billingham U16s

No beast of the east!

Bishop Auckland U16s v Billingham U16s

With talk of the beast from the east 2 on everyone’s lips it was uncertain if any game would go ahead on Sunday, however after an eight o’clock pitch inspection Bishop Auckland confirmed the game was on.

So, Billingham travelled to Bishop with 16 players to get back into winning ways on the back of a surprise loss away at Sunderland the week before.
It was clear in the warm up the lads were hungry for the win and were keen to get things under way. The lads started strong resulting in Aiden Young scoring a well worked first try for Billingham which was converted by Lewis Mallam. Bishop responded with two try’s converting the second. After a short discussion under the posts the lads brushed themselves down and went on to dominate the half retaining the majority of possession and bossing the scrum and line outs.

Aiden Young found himself one on one against the Bishop full back just before the half time whistle. He punted the ball through past the Bishop try line only needing to place his hand on the ball, however, an off the ball tackle prevented this. A failed appeal to the referee for a penalty try followed before he blew for halftime 12-7.
At halftime the lads knew they needed to continue as they had started and the win would be in the bag, and it was clear to the coaches and supporters that the way the team was performing a win was achievable providing lads could keep it together.
The second half started the same as the first with Billingham taking control of the game from the whistle which frustrated Bishop. This led to a 35-man stand-off that was quickly sorted by the referee and it was back to business. Billingham continued to push which resulted in Flash unleashing his pace down the wing to score Billingham’s second try converted by Lewis to take the lead to 12-14.
Some great play by Billingham’s forwards saw Bishop remain on the back foot. Clayton was back on form and Jake Lenham stepped up to the plate to take control in the absence of the captain Max Dunning. Jake was outstanding organising the lads in defence and during set plays in attack. Every player on the pitch did their bit all game.
Dan Taylors eventually scored his first try of the day again converted by Lewis 12-21. Bishop with a squad of 27 on the day attempted to turn things around before but the lads were never going to let this happen. Dan Taylor scored his second try converted by Lewis who was clearly on fire all game.
The final score a well-deserved win 12-28 to Billingham. Forwards man of the match Jake Lenham and Lewis Mallam for the backs well done lads. This said it was clearly a full team performance and outstanding discipline which took the win.
The coaches would like to wish all the U16s lads and their families a Merry Christmas and we will see you boxing day.
