Consett travelled south to attempt to even up the score against Billingham team that beat them on the road 0-39.
The Billingham players were feeling confident during the warm up, all keen to just get the game started. With the return of captain Max Dunning, and a debut for Jacob, Billingham were up to full-strength and up for the game which was clear from the off.
The game kicked off with a great kick by Lewis Mallam chased down by Alex Smith and Zohaib Nasir. Jay Wardle immediately turned the ball over from the tackle followed by a great forward run by Jake Lenham and two passes saw Jay get the first try for Billingham.
Billingham played some great rugby and continued to look dangerous in attack. However, some great resilience from the Consett players in defence made it difficult for Billingham to get the ball over the line. After some intense play from the forwards the ball eventually found its way to Will Ross who linked with Aiden Young and Dan Taylor broke through a rare gap in the Consett defence to score his first try.
Consett pinned Billingham back into their 22 for a good 10 minute but some fantastic defence work led to a well earned turn over for Billingham. Lewis Mallam immediately saw the Consett fullback out of position and put an inch perfect Crossfield kick into Aiden Youngs hands to score his first try after out running the Consett backline with his blistering pace. Converted by Lewis Mallam.
Jacob entered play after Jake Lenham left the pitch because a head injury. Jacob made an immediate impact with some ‘bone shaking’ tackles before scoring a well worked team try converted by Lewis Mallam.
Consett answered with a very well worked try before Aiden Young scored his second from another sublime Crossfield kick from Lewis Mallam. Consett scored there second from a line out which was quickly cancelled out by Aiden Youngs third try which was converted again by Lewis Mallam. Consett scored their third and last try in the dying seconds of the game to conclude an excellent display by both teams.
Bailey Warren had an awesome game and was awarded man of the march for the Billingham forwards. Jacob was awarded man of the match for the backs and it was clear that he will be a first-class addition to the team.
Every Billingham player put in a brilliant performance today and finished the game with a well-earned win. Well done from all the coaches. See you Wednesday at training. Let’s get everyone down to push on for the next game.
