Billingham lose by 2 in a county final thriller

Billingham lose by 2

After a tough long and demanding season Billingham travelled to Consett in their last game of the season. This was the County Cup final vs Durham City.

Having not played Durham for a number of seasons Billingham went into the unknown amd we're for sure the under dogs against a well known and well drilled Durham side.

Billingham were missing vital players with Max (shoulder) Reece (calf) Lewis (falcons) Marc (hip) David (knee). All gutted not to be donning the green and white.

Billingham shot out of the blocks pummelling a Durham forward pack with determination and aggression to score in the corner. A swirling win meant a difficult day for the kickers. Con missed.

Durham pounced back in what was a harsh decision not to award Billingham a penalty for a clear guillotine neck hold. A ripped ball and a gallop up the pitch saw Durham take the lead with conversion being kicked.

The game was end to end and with Billingham continually shocking Durhams defence with their big ball carries the lead continued to change hands throughout the half.

Billingham went into the half 2 points adrift.

Billingham bombed down Into Durhams and pinned them down only for costly handling errors and 'forward' passes to be given in score by areas.

Again the lead changed hands only for Durham to make onelast surge up the touchline to score although confirmed by the Durham coach their player dropped the ball over the line but to be missed by the ref.

Billingham pressed and battered Durham line again but for Durham to hold out turn over given from a resulting penalty and kick the ball out of play.

Durham 29 Billingham 27

Thank you to Durham for a thriller of a game and the nice comments about the team and how they thought they lost it.

They things happen, we win some and lose some but we are developing and we will have our day!!

Thank you for all coaches, players and parents for their commitment this season. This has been the best although demanding season to date and can see only more positives to come!!

It’s our final Kids First Champion for the season! David ‘Flats’ Flatman and two special guests surprise Ellingham & Ringwood RFC.
