Lions show strength in depth in the club with a good performance against Blaydon

BILLINGHAM LIONS V BLAYDON COUNTY CUP GAME
A chilling breeze saw this weeks visitors take to the field with a very big and experienced side. The front row paring of the McCabes (no reloation) was joined by Wallace needing a full game after a couple of weeks benching for the firsts. The Lions were not short of experience either with Phil Raey, Durnion and Burgumj returning to the back row and Scott in the power house all of who gave good account of themselves hammering the opposition pack in the tight and in the open. The opening honours went to the Lions with the ”three scrum halves ” Burgum Sayers and Woodhouse showing neat hands and Ker finishing in style to silence the visiting crowd with Armstrong stroking the conversion. Five minutes later Blaydon struck back but could not convert the kick. On the quarter hour an Armstrong grubber bounced enticingly around the touch line. The defending full back waited for it to go out but Hopley who chased everything raced in to steal the ball and score. The visitors scored twice more and Billingham answering with a penalty to see the Lions trailing and bring half time with a score of
Lions 15 – Blaydon 17
Just after the turn around Phil Raey who had ran all game made way for the returning Amos but then as the Lions pressed hard an interception saw Blaydon score three times to stretch their lead to twenty-one points. Hammond joined the fray as the lads fought back and Keenan broke clear as we all thought he would be stopped by two opposition defenders he popped to Westall who finished the move with a try. With ten minutes to go Woodhouse limped off and with only forwards on the bench Danny Westall joined his brother Matty causing a reshuffle amongst the team. Almost immediately after Blaydon stretched their lead further with a converted try but Billingham had the last word as Fernie won the ball and Sayers set Armstrong away with Ker getting his second of the day with a drive over from close in. A very good performance against a strong visiting side showed how far the Lions have come this season.
