Team Heartthrob

Yesterday we caught up with club pin-up (self-appointed) and utility back Harry-Jon Morgan. A vocal player with genuine gas and a slick side-step.

1. How old were you when you started playing rugby?
I tried Rugby once aged 6 due to it being the family sport but didn’t fancy it at a young age so It took me until my first year of secondary school to start playing after that I had a short 2 year sabbatical from the game before returning properly aged 15 and weighing about 6 stone dripping wet.

2. What was your first rugby memory?
My first rugby memory would be back when my dad took me to a session at Bredon rugby club aged 6. I refused to join in and cried profusely as it was “too rough” to which my dad reacted by not speaking to my mum for the better part of 2 weeks.

3. Who was your role model and why?
Role model? Easy! Has to be Quade Cooper. The man is extremely creative on the pitch and has an outstanding skill set. I relate to him a lot because in a game, the stunts he pulls are either absolutely biblical and really pay off or can tend to put his team mates in a bit of bother. This applies to me on and more often off the pitch.

4. Can you remember your first training session with Billingham?
My first training session at Billingham would have been with Wayne Finneys Colts side aged 17. I’d just moved over from a different club and the first thing he said to me was “you better have told the coaches you were coming here... because if not you can go back” . Strong words from a strong character.

5. What do you eat before a big match?
If it’s a big game it has to be a bowl of oats, followed by 3 crumpets with Lurpak and marmite on topped off with a poached egg on each. You either love it or hate it.

6. Describe your perfect weekend.
Perfect weekend for me would be smashing a maccies in on a Friday night and watching some inspirational movies or tv shows to get me hyped for the game. Followed by winning with the Billingham lads on the Saturday and having a few beerios to celebrate. Finished off with spending Sunday watching Channel 5 movies and eating a fantastic roast with the Mrs and family.

7. What’s been your career highlight?
My career highlight would have been playing in the college nationals 7s tournament in bath with a pretty strong squad. Bath isn’t far from my home town so my Nan travelled there to see me play for the first time and I ended up scoring some how.

8. What one tip would you give a young person looking to succeed?
For a young person getting into rugby I’d just say make the most of what ever help you get, be prepared to work hard off the field and always laugh it’s never fun if you don’t laugh.

9. What’s the next goal in your rugby career?
Next goal in my rugby career is to beat Middlesbrough at the weekend for the Lions. Pie face is leaving so we’ve been told we have to win or we are terrible mates.
